Saturday, August 6, 2011 Pulaski, NY 65.5 miles

The owners of The Carriage House served us a delicious breakfast this morning of homemade (from scratch) pancakes with real New York Maple Syrup, sausage links, fresh fruit and good coffee.

Queen Anne's Lace
As we left Sodus Point - the route was full of fruit orchards and lovely homes. It wasn’t long, though, before we were way out in the country. The farms began to look shabby and the homes, depressing - like folks are just hanging on. The houses needed drastic repairs and the yards were often full of clutter and trash. . . . There were two bright spots in the day. The first was the hills. This is the first day we’ve had ongoing, long and sometimes steep hills. They were both challenging and fun. The other bright spot was meeting an Amish wife and mother at her roadside bake stand. After seeing a sign advertising the stand, Peg was on the lookout for it and just barely noticed it as we whizzed by. She yelled and we stopped, turned around and went back. There was a kind of shed next to a two story home which sat right on the edge of busy Hwy. 3. We went inside the shed and selected a raspberry filled sweet roll and put money in a basket. While we sat outside on a bench enjoying the sweet roll, a beautiful Amish lady came outside. She looked to be about 30 and pregnant. She told Peg that this will be her ninth child; the others are 12 yrs. old and younger. Two of the children also came outside and were just beautiful, too, with pretty blue eyes. They use no electricity and their transportation is a horse drawn buggy. We couldn’t stay long, but it was very nice to visit with her for a few minutes. Wish I could have taken their picture, but that’s a No-no with Amish.

Laid back enjoying life!

Rain finally came this afternoon but only lightly. Linda (chef) decided to order pizza since she couldn’t use the Dutch ovens for lasagna. Pizza was good.
