Sunday, July 10, 2011 Milaca, MN 58.87 miles
After yesterday’s long day, today seemed rather short. Judie and I were in Milaca by 12:30. We did increase the mileage a little bit by going briefly in and out of the Lindberg State Park (it’s shut down due to budget constraints, but it was OK to bike around); and, near Milaca we toured the little community of Foreston. This reminded me of Merigold, MS. Some of the gals are suffering from the heat (93 today), and tomorrow’s ride will be even hotter. The pavement gets almost unbearable in the afternoon. Judie and I got lunch at Subway again today and dessert at DQ (we felt it was important to cool off from within). We’re staying tonight at Super 8 - surprisingly OK, only the AC doesn’t work real well. But, then, we’re sitting in the middle of what probably used to be a field, and it’s HOT outside.
Pictures today are courtesy of my riding partner. I misplaced my camera this morning; found it in my luggage. There wasn’t much to photograph other than some beautiful flower gardens along the Mississippi River Road. This was in the first 15 miles; the homes on the river were quite lovely. I wonder if the river floods this far north. I sure didn’t see any evidence. Also, I have a question for the first farmer I see. Why do the silos have a blue checkerboard pattern painted around the top? I think it may have something to do with the Purina Feed Co., but their trademark is a red/white checkerboard pattern.
There are a lot of through bikers on the same route with us, as we’re following (for the most part) the Adventure Cycling maps. Today, we saw a couple on a Comotion tandem pulling a Bob trailer. They started 5-6 weeks ago in Anacortes, WA, and are headed to Bar Harbor. I think their daily distances are longer than ours depending on lodging availability.
Pictures below are from dinner (my camera).I’m a little anxious about tomorrow’s 106 mile day, and may choose to sag in at some point. I’m sure that I won’t be the only one to do so. I’m planning to start right after 6 AM breakfast.
Many thanks to those who have sent comments. I really appreciate hearing from you.

Glad you are having a good time. Just glad it is you and not me. Wanted you to know I drove by your home this afternoon on my way back from The Racquet Club for a tennis match. It looked fine. Has been extremely Hope you have some cooler days ahead.
Hi Clark! I am enjoying reading your blog and looking at your photos, Gray and Margaret sent me the link so I could follow your adventure. I have been watching the Tour De France every day this past week, beautiful scenery. The weather in Florida has been very hot and humid, so I haven't done much riding outside. Hopefully you'll have some cooler days as you continue on your trip. Hope the 106 miles goes okay today. Be safe and have a wonderful trip.
Hi Clark:
A "voice" from your past - the MRR. Enjoy reading your blog and sharing the adventure. You, my dear, look maHvelous! I read you had a refit on your bike. Did they put a compact double on front? If so, how does it compare with a triple on your climbs?
Wishing you cool temps (a girl can wish, can't she?) and tail winds.
Judi Mittelberg
This is me - not the other link. ;-]

Clark.........everything sounds great......especially the food.....and I know it's always awesome after biking 100 miles! Still real hot here........110 Degrees is our heat index but it's supposed to really make it to 100. Nothing unusual going on around here! Carol
Clark..love reading the blog. My love-in-law, Josh, has relatives in Milaca. He spent summers there. Loving the menus and pictures you have taken. Beautiful part of GOD's country. Praying He will put a breeze at your back and great air-conditiong tonight. Vicki
Clark,
The girls and I have enjoyed reading your blog each day! They are all packed up and ready to leave for camp tomorrow. We got your postcards today and Emma says the pirate ship looks like something out of Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Eliza thinks we need one of those big pelican statues for Shem creek! It sounds like your having fun and eating good food. Hope the ac works better at the next stop so you can cool off! It has been hot here too...glad to be going to the mountains tomorrow. Take care, hope the long ride went okay. We love you! Margaret, Emma, Eliza, and Gray
